Overview of the Attorney Hiring Process

When an indivudal, family, or business requires the services of an attorney, it is often for reasons that evoke a lot of emotion or cause a lot of stress.  Whether you are getting a divorce, filing for bankruptcy, or need defended against criminal charges, the times one requires the services of an attorney are usually some of the most difficult moments in one's life.

At Rodak Law Office the legal services experience begins with the inital client consultation.  As a rule, I will not agree to represent a client until we have had some form of an initial consultation regarding your matter, whether that be in person, over the phone, or via some other cummincative medium.  I also typically charge a consultation fee, usually $75.00 to $100.00 depending on the type of matter and the subject matter of the initial consultation.  These initial consultations typically last 30 minutes to 1 hour, but can go longer or shorter depending on how much time is required for me to assess your needs.

You will likely see a lot of ads boasting FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION.  In my experience, you usually get what you pay for.  By charging a consultation fee, I am able to allocate ample time to really get a clear picture and feel for your matter, get to know you a little bit, and adequately assess your needs and goals.  Also, by agreeing to sit down with me for a paid consultation, I know you are serious about hiring an attorney, and not simply looking for some free advice.

During the initial consultation we will discuss your matter in great detail, and try to determine the best course of action to take to solve the problem you are facing.  At the end of the day, attorneys are just that; problem solvers.  During the initial consultation I will give you my HONEST AND STRAIGHT-FORWARD opinion as to mertis of your matter.  I'll also try to give you some possible options to resolve it, and my best guess of the potential costs associated each of those options.

Also, if I am convinced you don't need a lawyer to solve your problem, I will tell you just that.  It is my belief that without honest information and advice you can't make an informed decision.  I will recommend hiring me only when I feel there are no alternative options, as I personally and professionally believe that using the services of an attorney should always be a last resort.

If after the initial consultation you decide you would like to hire me, then we will discuss, in detail, the estimated cost associated therewith.  Whenever possible, I will use a "flat fee" arrangment, so you know EXACTLY what you will end up paying for my services. When that is not possible, I will give you a clear understanding of what I charge per hour, how I bill my time, and my best estimate as to what I think the matter will cost.  I will also tell you  the amount of money you will need for a retainer before the representation will begin.   We will sign a written fee agreement that spells out the details of the representation.  There will be no surprises when it comes to the fees and costs you will be billed.

After we have met for the initial consultation, reviewed and signed the fee agreement, and collected the initial retainer, then the representation will officially commence.  I will dilligently work on your matter, and keep you apprised of the status of your matter.  Most of my clients have my personal cell phone number, and it is not uncommon for my clients to visit me with or without an appointment.

When your matter has reached its conclusion, I will send you a "Closing Letter" and a final statement showing all work done on your matter, and breaking down all fees and costs.  If the matter was addressed without requiring all of your retainer, you will receive a refund of the balance.

From start to finish, you will be an informed client and have the tools you need to actively participate in the solution to your legal matter.  Win or lose, rain or shine, it is my goal to make sure that when you hire me, you have the most positive experience possible. I look forward to meeting you and helping you find a solution to your problem.

Sincerely,
